The NASA Perseverance rover has made an exciting discovery on Mars. While drilling rock samples on the planet's surface, the rover was able to detect organic matter in the rocks. This finding suggests that favorable conditions for microbial life may have existed on Mars in the ancient past.  The rocks that the Perseverance rover analyzed are believed to be sedimentary rocks which were formed in the presence of water billions of years ago. Organic compounds tend to preserve better in wet environments, increasing the possibility that they were formed biologically.
