The green initiatives of Dubai Electricity And Water Authority: Fueling UAE's Climate Action Drive

During his presentation, HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), focused on the leading role of the UAE in tackling climate change. Al Tayer observed that, DEWA is undertaking large projects to enhance the portion of Dubai’s energy source that comes from renewables. This is in line with the UAE Net Zero 2050 Strategy, the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050, and the Dubai Net Zero Carbon Emissions Strategy 2050. These efforts aim to achieve 100% clean energy production by 2050.

DEWA will have an installed solar capacity more than 5,000 MW in 2030. By now, the park has produced 2860 MW while 2033 MW is under construction. This solar park has featured world’s tallest Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) tower and most extensive thermal energy storage facility, whereas when fully operational, carbon emissions will be lessened by injurious 6.5 million tons yearly. In addition to the solar energy project, DEWA has started a green hydrogen project within the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park. The project is aimed at establishing the UAE as a leading player in the global market for green hydrogen, using green resources to split water molecules (electrolysis). To promote green mobility, DEWA launched the Green Charger Initiative in 2014, establishing a network of over 700 electric vehicle charging stations across Dubai. This initiative supports the UAE’s goal of becoming the smartest and happiest city in the world. The dedication of the Emirates to renewables and sustainability shows leadership in the field of global climate action, and a commitment towards a greener tomorrow.
