UAE Recognized as More 'OFW-Friendly' by Philippine Senator

Philippines Senate Minority Leader Aquilino Pimentel III has lauded the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for its strides in improving labor conditions for foreign workers, particularly overseas Filipino workers (OFWs). He highlighted a significant decrease in the number of runaway maids and domestic helpers in the UAE this year, attributing it to the UAE government's efforts under President Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan's leadership. Pimentel commended the UAE's commitment to enhancing the welfare and rights of foreign workers, citing close cooperation with labor attachés as instrumental in achieving tangible progress.

Moreover, Pimentel welcomed a recent directive mandating private sector employers to include all employees, including domestic workers, in the compulsory health insurance scheme by 2025. This proactive measure emphasizes the UAE's dedication to fair employment standards and the well-being of workers. Pimentel noted that the UAE, as the second-largest host of overseas Filipinos in the Middle East, shares a deep-rooted friendship with the Philippines, exemplified by mutual respect and cooperation.

In addition to legislative efforts, Pimentel highlighted the UAE's humanitarian initiatives towards the Filipino community. Collaborative programs, such as the Iftar program during Ramadan, facilitated by the Emirates Red Crescent, demonstrate the UAE's solidarity and support for Filipinos. From providing relief aid during natural disasters to extending assistance during the COVID-19 pandemic, the UAE's longstanding humanitarian efforts underscore its commitment to humanitarian principles and the well-being of foreign workers, according to Pimentel.
