UAE's Possible Increase in Public Holidays by 2025

The United Arab Emirates is considering adding more public holidays to the national calendar in the coming years Currently UAE residents and citizens enjoy around 10 federal holidays each year. However new rules may change this starting in 2025.

The new rules relate to the Gregorian calendar transition that many countries follow for their work weeks and holidays The Gregorian calendar is slowly being adopted more widely in the Middle East as countries modernize By 2025 the UAE workweek is expected to shift from Sunday Thursday to Saturday Thursday to align with the Gregorian calendar.

This switch will mean the beginning and end of weekends will change Ramadan and Eid holidays may fall on different days of the Gregorian calendar compared to past years To accommodate these changes the government is looking at adjusting national holidays to still give residents time off around religious occasions.

More paid holidays could help employees better observe religious traditions and celebrations It may also boost tourism and domestic spending if long weekends are more common Employers would need to adjust work schedules and staffing for the revised holiday dates.

No final decisions have been made yet on the exact number or timing of additional holidays Consultations are ongoing between the government and private sector on balancing cultural and religious practices with business needs The new rules could add anywhere from 2 to 5 more holidays each year.

Residents and companies will have from now until 2025 to prepare for the potential calendar changes More clarity from officials is expected in the coming years on how holidays will be adjusted. The reforms aim to combine traditional customs with a modernized working week structure.
