UAE Mediates New Prisoner Swap Between Russia and Ukraine

Russia and Ukraine are set to exchange 180 prisoners in a deal facilitated by the United Arab Emirates, here is a diplomatic breakthrough. CNN announced that, on Wednesday, the sixth swap taking place this year will involve the two countries releasing 90 prisoners each while using UAE-mediated negotiations. This swap will bring the number of prisoners exchanged in 2024 through UAE mediation close to 1,400. Russia and Ukraine, as well as Russia and United States have had their negotiations facilitated by UAE. Previously, logistical support for the high profile exchange that led to the release of WNBA star Brittney Griner from Russian custody in exchange for arms dealer Viktor Bout was provided by the Gulf state since it also served as a venue for such negotiations.

In early June, Russian President Vladimir Putin claimed that his country had captured 6,465 Ukrainian soldiers compared to only 1,348 Russians held by Ukraine. This past February 9th, 2024 saw the swapping of 100 POWs from both sides with the mediation of the UAE. This marked the third time since December 2023 when such swaps were brokered by the UAE. The UAE is dedicated to humanitarian efforts and peace promotion in the region, which emphasizes commitment to reducing human suffering and promoting peace through strategic diplomacy.
