UAE makes a humanitarian commitment of $70 million to Sudan: A lifeline during crisis

70 percent of its $100 million pledge made in April at the International Humanitarian Conference for Sudan and Neighboring Countries has been allocated by United Arab Emirates to UN agencies and humanitarian organizations, underscoring UAE’s leading position as one of the major donors in Africa aiming at easing the current crisis. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs made it clear that they are directing this aid to important partners such as United Nations Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affair (OCHA), UN World Food Program (WFP), UN High Commissioner for Refugee (UNHCR), Food and Agriculture Organization of United Nations (FAO), and World Health Organization (WHO). The aim of this broad strategy is to avert starvation and to completely devastate the humanitarian situation in Sudan by providing food, health facilities, jobs, emergency shelter and protecting women.

The UAE, beyond this heavy financial aid has continually assisted Sudanese since the crisis began; this support has come through various projects. Among these are the launch of an air corridor between Sudan and Chad, which saw $130million worth of humanitarian donations delivered alongside 9500 metric tonnes of food and medicine distributed through 148 relief aircrafts.

Another ship carrying roughly 1,000 tons of critical relief materials has been sent. Additionally, the Emirate of Abu Dhabi is also doing humanitarian work by helping refugees in Abéché and other parts of Chad. In South Sudan, on the other hand, a plane carrying food for 100 tons has already departed for internally displaced Sudanese refugees with the help of WFP. These actions are concrete evidence of the UAE’s never wavering dedication to mitigating the extremity of the crisis as well as standing by the side of affected southern Sudanese by extending any humanitarian support needed to them across those areas.
