Recently, Suhail bin Mohammed Al Mazrouei, who is the minister of energy and infrastructure, attended the BRICS ministers of transport meeting in St. Petersburg, Russia. In the meeting, he emphasized that the UAE is ready to work together with other BRICS countries in order to promote sustainable transport programs. Speaking of the importance of having multimodal transportation in order to achieve economic development to the benefit of society, Al Mazrouei underlined the UAE’s targets concerning attaining energy-efficient means of transportation like making sure that half of all its cars will be electric or hybrid by 2050. This, in addition to its active maritime industry and good land transport sector coupled with initiatives like developing more railway systems such as the Etihad railways, is an indication of how serious the nation is about promoting sustainable and efficient transportation means.

The meeting ended with a declaration acknowledging transport as an important driver of growth and ability to recover economically. The UAE engages actively in BRICS arenas such as joining NDB in 2021 and participating in the “Friends of BRICS” which underscores its dedication to multilateral action and sustainable development. By associating with BRICS, the UAE strengthens its diplomatic bonds and at the same time champions multilateralism for the purpose of global peace and prosperity.
