NYU Abu Dhabi Calls for Sustainable Space Exploration, with Rewards and Benefits for Earth

The team led by Dimitra Atri are urging a sustainable space revolution at NYU Abu Dhabi that should implement stricter regulations on the Moon, Mars and even Earth to be protected from the adverse effects of space exploration. They envision not only preventing biological contamination but also addressing orbital debris, crowding, and security, even offering a carrot to countries that choose to play by the tougher rules. The toil for sustainable navigation to the space is a promising start to the discovery of creative applications on the earth.

"Sustainability must become a core principle of human space exploration," said Atri. "Just as we view climate change as the great challenge facing our terrestrial human society, the space community should begin to address space sustainability with the same urgency. The rules and procedures implemented now will govern the next generation of space exploration -- rules that create a basis for clean and safe space exploration that will not only be productive and enforceable for years to come but are also stronger and more specific in their requirements and enforceability."
