COP28 Presidency Urges Global Collaboration to Accelerate Sustainable Development

 



The urgent need for global cooperation was stressed by Dr. Sultan bin Ahmed Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and COP28 President, in an effort to fully utilize Artificial Intelligence (AI), energy transition and growth of the Global South in promoting climate-positive sustainable development. Speaking at the opening ceremony of the Baku Energy Week, Dr. Al Jaber the pivotal role of AI in driving energy efficiencies that will help curb emissions when there is rising energy demand. He made evident the importance of enhancing cooperation between the power industry and information technology industry that would drive the development aim to decarbonize globally emphasizing on actionable accomplices as exemplified by the groundbreaking solar and wind energy projects in Azerbaijan developed by Masdar and SOCAR.

The historic accomplishments of COP28, including the UAE Consensus, which produced wide-ranging climate breakthroughs and highlighted the significance of multilateralism in tackling climate challenges were again underlined by Dr. Al Jaber. As he looked forward to COP29, he stressed on the need for more potent nationally determined contributions (NDCs) in conformity with the UAE Consensus and brought into focus the role of the  chairmanship of COP presidencies in pushing for ambitious common climate actions. Dr. Al Jaber urged the industry to be involved in initiatives like the Oil and Gas Decarburization Charter and underscored the importance of International Finance Institutions (IFIs) and Multilateral Development Banks (MDBs) in creating more investable emerging markets. Nuclear energy has the potential to meet the world's long-term needs. In conclusion, he stated that global cooperation was necessary and called on all countries to adopt policies that would lead to transformational change and embrace these technologies so as to safeguard the future of humanity on earth.

President bin Zayed emphasized the critical need for accessible and affordable climate finance, citing the newly established UAE fund named Alterra as a strategic initiative to facilitate this. The fund's allocation includes $25 billion to attract institutional capital for large-scale climate investments and an additional $5 billion for risk mitigation capital, encouraging investment flows into developing countries. China and UAE to Deepen Cooperation in Strategic Areas

  China and the United Arab Emirates have agreed to deepen their cooperation in strategic areas, including development strategies, investment, and climate change. The two ministers agreed to take the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries next year as an opportunity to further consolidate the traditional friendship between their people. They also agreed to implement the important outcomes of the first China-Arab States Summit and the China-Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Summit, and to strive for reaching an agreement on the China-GCC free trade agreement as soon as possible. This is a strategic move by both countries. It's good to see them working together to achieve common goals as there's a lot of potential for both countries to benefit.
