Italy Donates 3D-Printed Replica of Assyrian Statue Destroyed by ISIS to Iraq

Italy's cultural diplomacy shines brightly as it gifts a meticulously reconstructed Assyrian statue to Iraq. The monumental "Bull of Nimrud," ravaged by ISIS in 2015, has been resurrected through the innovative use of 3D-printing technology by Italian artisans. This remarkable feat, hailed as a "miracle" by former culture minister Francesco Rutelli, underscores Italy's commitment to preserving global cultural treasures and fostering international cooperation in heritage protection.

Permanently housed outside the Basrah Museum in Basra, Iraq, the replica symbolizes resilience and hope amidst the devastation caused by ISIS. Italy's current culture minister, Gennaro Sangiuliano, echoes the sentiment, emphasizing the intrinsic value of cultural heritage in shaping a nation's identity and history. Rutelli, leading the charge through his organization, sees the donation as a beacon of Italian soft power and cultural diplomacy, standing as a testament to the enduring spirit of humanity in the face of adversity.

The journey to recreate the "Bull of Nimrud" involved meticulous research and innovative techniques. Led by restorer Nicola Salvioli, experts studied photos and videos of the original monument to create a precise model in polystyrene. Subsequently, a 3D printer was utilized to craft a fiberglass copy, which was then adorned with plastic substances mixed with stone dust to enhance its authenticity. Financed by the Associazione Incontro di Civiltà, this collaborative effort showcases the power of international solidarity in preserving and commemorating our shared cultural heritage.
